J Higgins Workshop Gallery 2020

John Higgins attended the May 25-29 workshop. He was using excellent Sony equipment: Sony A7R iv camera body and Sony 400 mm, f/2.8 GM OSS lens and 1.4x SEL14TC teleconverter, supported by a sturdy tripod and gimbal head. Even though his effective focal length was shorter than I recommend for warbler photography – 560mm at f/4.0, the 61 megapixel camera afforded the ability to crop extensively, if desired. This flexibility in cropping allows great flexibility in composition, as demonstrated in his excellent results below.

John let me view his images from the workshop. I picked out and copied a few images from the thousands of images he took by viewing them in BreezeBrowser Pro. This took me about 2 hours.

I selected images that were sharp on the bird, exposed correctly or very close to correctly, and had a good head angle on the bird (not facing away). Composition was a priority, as well as live vegetation in the background (when in focus or partially in focus), as opposed to sticks without leaves or needles.

One of the important things I do is correct the contrast and especially the color casts that happen with digital capture of warblers and other songbirds. I also demonstrate all of this to clients if desired.

This gallery and other galleries of persons who attended workshops are intended to show results. For every image, copyright is that of the owner of the image. My use of the small jpeg from each selected raw image is for this gallery only. After preparing the jpegs of a workshop attendee gallery I destroy all of their copied raw images and original prepared full-sized files.
